Description.

STOA designed the KHOU 11 Avenida Studio beneath the grand escalators of the George R. Brown Convention Center, creating a dynamic, acoustically optimized space that preserves panoramic views of Discovery Green and the Downtown Houston skyline.

STOA was awarded this prestigious project in late 2017 as part of the George R. Brown Convention Center’s plan to develop retail/ amenity centers along the ground floor facing Avenida de las Americas. The scope involved designing a tv studio by carving out space underneath the grand escalators of the convention center while maintaining the fantastic views of Discovery Green and the Downtown skyline. Working together with Griffin Partners and KHOU personnel, STOA developed a custom layout that features a 5 degree tilted storefront window system to avoid reflection of lights during filming. Acoustics were enhanced by providing acoustic wall panels, insulated partitions with z-channels, and batt insulation above the ceiling tiles.

The design highlights a sleek structural rhythm of angled steel supports and expansive glass façades, creating a light-filled studio environment that harmonizes with the convention center’s architectural framework while showcasing STOA’s precision in integrating form, function, and visual clarity for broadcast performance.
