Description.
STOA integrated hidden technology, enhanced lighting, and ADA-compliant upgrades into this 1912 Rice University amphitheater while maintaining its historic character.
STOA was selected by Rice University to modernize this historic teaching amphitheater through carefully integrated audiovisual and accessibility upgrades while preserving the integrity of the original 1912 design. The scope included new concealed technology systems, ADA-compliant lectern enhancements, and custom millwork to house controls, keyboard, mouse, and an articulated monitor that could be hidden when not in use. Lighting improvements were introduced with discreet LED fixtures integrated into existing soffits and beneath the historic blackboards to eliminate shadows caused by the original pendant lighting. Existing projector pedestals were modified to accommodate new projection equipment and updated screen formats, ensuring compatibility with contemporary 16:9 presentation standards. Throughout the project, STOA collaborated closely with local historic reviewers to ensure that modern interventions remained visually unobtrusive and respectful of the building’s architectural character.

The design carefully preserves and highlights the amphitheater’s defining architectural elements—including its arched colonnades, exposed timber trusses, historic millwork, and tiered seating—ensuring the space retains its original character while supporting modern instruction.
